CannAmm Occupational Testing Services is proud to recognize a number of different events and holidays throughout the year that reflect on the diversity of our team and industry. International Women’s Day (IWD), an annual event held on March 8th, is a global day which celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is also a day that marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity, the equal contribution of genders to every dimension of life.

Since the early 1900’s, individuals have been raising awareness of women’s oppression and inequality which has spurred women to become more active in campaigning for change. The first internationally recognized IWD was held in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. It was at this event where over one million women and men attended rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, to hold public office and end discrimination. With growing spirit and popularity, campaigns and events continued to be held worldwide throughout the century. Important dates to mention for IWD include the first-time celebration by the United Nations in 1975, the re-energizing of the day when the internationalwomensday.com platform was launched in 2001, and the recent campaigns including the #breakthebias theme being spread today. Looking back, it is clear to see that IWD has been celebrated and recognized by billions of people worldwide as IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere as it is not country, group or organization specific.

Additionally, it is important to bring awareness to the intersectionality that comes forward with IWD. Intersectionality is the acknowledgement that people have their own unique experiences of discrimination and oppression. These unique experiences can be anything that can marginalize people including gender, race, class, sexual orientation, physical ability, and more. Though IWD has been celebrated for over a century, not all groups that identify with this day have been represented equally. It is crucial to recognize that though strides are being made towards gender parity, we need to take an intersectional approach and strive for equity for all people.

As an organization, recognizing this annual event is a humbling experience as we understand that though we have begun to implement programs like our Inclusion and Diversity Committee to help celebrate and acknowledge the differences in our work environment, we still have a long way to go. With your input and recommendations our team at CannAmm aims to move forward in a more conscious manner.
