Prepare for Your Appointment

Whether you’ve been booked for a drug and alcohol test or an occupational health assessment, we’re here to help make your appointment as smooth and stress-free as possible. Our experienced staff follow consistent, respectful procedures and are committed to supporting your health and safety every step of the way.

General Guidelines for All Testing Appointments

Please keep these key points in mind for any type of test:

  • Bring government-issued photo ID. This is required to verify your identity.
  • Our staff are highly trained professionals who follow strict, standardized protocols to ensure fair and accurate testing.
  • You will be treated with respect and professionalism throughout the process.
  • Follow all instructions from your collector or medical technician. Non-cooperation may be considered a refusal to test.
  • Children are not allowed in the collection site. All children should be supervised outside the collection site by someone other than yourself or CannAmm staff.
  • Testing is quick and straightforward. We aim to complete your appointment efficiently and with minimal wait times.

Preparing for Your Drug and Alcohol Test

Drug and alcohol testing helps employers maintain safe workplaces and comply with regulatory standards. You may be scheduled for one of the following types of drug tests:

Urine Drug Testing

What to expect:

  • To help streamline your visit, please leave personal items and any prohibited objects (e.g., knives, lighters) at home or securely stored in your vehicle before arriving at the collection site.
  • You’ll be asked to remove outer clothing (like jackets or hats) and empty your pockets before entering the collection area.
  • You will provide a fresh urine sample under secure conditions.

The sample will be checked for:

  • Temperature and volume
  • Colour and odour
  • Presence of any foreign substances

If anything unusual is detected, you may be asked to provide a second sample or, possibly, undertake an observed collection.

What if You Can’t Go? (Shy Bladder Procedure)

We understand that sometimes it’s difficult to provide a urine sample right away. If you are unable to urinate during your first attempt:

  • You will be given up to three hours to provide a sufficient sample.
  • During this time, you will be required to stay at the collection site and will be provided with portioned water at regular intervals.
  • Our staff will support you respectfully and confidentially throughout the process.
  • If you are still unable to provide a sample within the allowed time, the situation will be documented and reported as per standard testing protocols.

This is a common and manageable situation.

Tips to prepare:

  • Hydrate normally. Do not overhydrate before the test.
  • Avoid bringing unnecessary items to the collection site to streamline the process.

Oral Fluid (Saliva) Drug Testing

What to expect:

  • To help streamline your visit, please leave personal items and any prohibited objects (e.g., knives, lighters) at home or securely stored in your vehicle before arriving at the collection site.
  • You’ll be asked to remove outer clothing (like jackets or hats) and empty your pockets before entering the collection area.
  • A certified collector will use a swab to collect a saliva sample from inside your mouth.

What if You Have Trouble Producing Saliva? (Shy Mouth Procedure)

In some cases, individuals may have difficulty producing enough saliva for the test. If this happens:

  • You will be given a second attempt to complete the testing.
  • Our staff are trained to support you respectfully and without judgment.

This is a common and manageable situation, and there is no need to feel anxious if it takes a bit longer.

Tips to prepare:

  • Arrive on time and follow any pre-test instructions.
  • Avoid eating, drinking, or using tobacco products shortly before your appointment.
  • Stay relaxed. Stress can reduce saliva production — we’ll guide you through the process patiently.

Preparing for Your Occupational Health Test

Occupational health assessments are designed to ensure you’re medically fit for your role and to support your long-term wellness at work.

What to Expect:

You may be asked to complete a medical history form either before or at the time of your appointment.

Depending on the type of assessment required, your visit may include one or more of the following tests:

  • Blood or Urine Tests
Fasting may be required for certain blood or clinical urine tests. If instructed, please avoid eating or drinking anything other than small amounts of water for 8 to 12 hours before your appointment.
  • Physical Exam
Wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement and physical activity.
  • Audiometric (Hearing) Test
Avoid exposure to loud noises before the test, ensure your ears are clean, and try to be well-rested. If you wear hearing aids, you will be asked to remove them during the test. A safe place will be provided to store them temporarily.
  • Vision Test
Bring your prescription glasses or contact lenses with you.
  • Respiratory Fit Testing
Arrive clean-shaven, as facial hair can interfere with proper respirator fit. If you are scheduled for N95 fit testing, you must bring your N95 respirator with you.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Avoid applying lotions or creams to your skin on the day of the test, as they may interfere with electrode placement. You may need to remove your upper clothing so electrodes can be placed on your chest, arms, and legs. The technician may also clean or shave small areas of skin to ensure good contact.
  • Pulmonary Function Testing
Avoid smoking and eating large meals for several hours before your test. Wear loose-fitting clothing to allow for unrestricted breathing.
  • Other Job-Specific Evaluations
Additional assessments may be required based on your job role or employer’s request.

Tips to Prepare:

  • Bring a list of any medications you are currently taking.
  • Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for physical activity or medical testing.
  • Bring any necessary forms or documentation provided by your employer or required for your evaluation
